An air handler is used when you don’t have a gas furnace. If you know much about a furnace, then you know the air conditioner (or heat pump) relies on the fan motor in the furnace for conditioning your air during our hot summer season.
If you heat your home another way, such as with a heat pump, then an air handler (also called a fan coil) is used instead of a furnace and evaporator coil. An air handler contains a fan motor (variable speed motors are whisper quiet) and a coil to hold refrigerant pumped in from the air conditioner or heat pump.
