During a typical hot Texas summer, a central air conditioner “keeps the cool” in your home. Of course, we all know that. But how does an air conditioner actually do it? By blowing cold air inside, right? No, not really.
If you go outside and look at your air conditioner, you’ll notice there is no ducting — Only small, metal piping. That’s because an air conditioner cools by compressing refrigerant, which condenses it down to a chilled liquid (refrigerant begins as a gas). The cold refrigerant is pumped inside to the indoor coil, and the fan motor in your furnace pulls air from the home, and forces it through the coil. The refrigerant absorbs heat energy from the air, and the process repeats!
